What is a Safety Management System (SMS)?
A Safety Management System (SMS) is the integration of a systematic, well-defined safety plan into the core elements of an organizational business plan. SMS will allow airport operators to identify and address safety issues, improve operations, and proactively increase the overall safety of the national airspace system (NAS).

Which airports are required to implement an SMS?
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in October 2010 requiring that airports certified under 14 CFR Part 139 implement a SMS. The final rule is expected to be issued this summer.

How long will airports have to implement an SMS?
Airports will have about 18 to 24 months to stand up their programs.

What are the anticipated deliverables that will be required to attain compliance?
